Challenge:
A consumer products manufacturer wanted to test the quality of their products under tension and compression. These tests mainly verify material rip strength and glue bond quality. Overall, approximately 150 test programs were needed. Existing general purpose machines were primarily developed for the metals industry, making them too powerful for use with paper products. The customer wanted a less expensive, more flexible solution.
Tensile Test Requirements
| Load |
1-100 lbs, vertical |
| Speed |
0.1-3 inches/sec |
| Duty Cycle |
100% |
| Repeatability |
±0.001 inches |
| Programmability |
Host RS-232C control |
| Interface |
Data collection via RS-232C operator interface to enter in test type. |
Solution:
| Control |
One axis smart microstepping drove/control |
| Actuators |
Rodless actuator |
| Accessories |
home sensor, end-of-travel sensors |
A rodless actuator, stepper control, and a load cell proved to be an effective solution. The controls wide speed range control met the customer's testing needs, and the remote operator interface fit well with the ergonomic design of the operator station. The analog input option on the controller allowed the operator to collect strain data directly over RS-232 without adding additional interface cards. A personal computer communicates with the controller and plots and stores performance data. The controller allows operator control and displays position and test status.
