Glue Dispensing - Linear Motors

Challenge:
To dispense symmetrical glue beads on both sides of a corrugated box as they pass by on a high speed conveyor line before being folded shut.  Motion requires 2G acceleration and 1.2 M/sec top speed.

Solution:
The motion performance needs either a belt drive or a direct drive linear motor. A linear motor provides longer life.  We implemented a thrust-tube linear motor design  consisting of one magnet-impregnated rod and two independently controlled motor coils.  The dispense heads are mounted to the coils.  A linear encoder provides position information to the integrated motion controller/amplifier package.
